Analysts expect it will be yet another strong online sales day. This is fantastic (provided they actually make profit margins) news for online retailers. On the contrary, small brick-and-mortar shops may be hurting as they are forced to compete in discounting price wars. As an industry veteran and fashion enthusiast, I have mix feelings about today's flash sales and exacerbated discount culture. Naturally, I enjoy it as a consumer. On the other hand, I'm saddened to see conventional retail weakening. How then can independent retailers stay relevant and competitive? Well, let's put it in the simplest form (it really is much more complex) -- provide unbeatable personal service, be adaptable, and stock exclusive products.
