Did you know that the Oscars are the second most watched annual TV event right behind the Super Bowl?  In 2012, it drew about 39 million viewers, a slight uptick from 2011.  In an effort to appeal to a younger audience, Seth MacFarlane was the chosen host.  Seth's controversial jokes (Comedy Central's the Roast can be distastefully harsh)  might not be for everyone, but generally I appreciate his sense of humor.  So I for one was delighted, but more curious to see how he would handle a different crowd outside of his fan base. While the attempt to bring back the golden age with singing and dancing skits, the jokes fell mostly flat as hosting a prestigious event such as this was clearly out of his comfort zone.

Speaking of comfort zone, let's move on to mine- fashion.  Unlike last year's refreshing bold colors and a balanced interesting mix of different designs and silhouettes, this year was filled with either boring black, navy or blinding sparkly gowns. Exceptions to the rule are the ensembles here:

  1. Olivia Munn looked sensational in a gold embroidered deep red Marchesa dress.
  2. Amy Adams is a proven red-carpet best dressed season after season.  She wore an ice grey Oscar de la Renta strapless gown with a soft tulle frilly train. Bare décolletage, chignon, and diamonds only completed her effortless chic look.
  3. Naomi Watts' Armani dress had a space-age cool cutout at the shoulder.  My absolute fav!
  4. Stacey Kiebler wore a stunning black/silver Naeem khan razor front gown from his fall 2013 collection.  The gown was slightly altered from its runway version as to be not sheer on the bottom for the red carpet.
  5. Zoe Saldana chose an Alexis Mabille couture gown.  With a floral-embroidered bodice, and matching belt and long bow, this ensemble was uber feminine; which only made the bows on her shoes overkill.
  6. Jessica Chastain opted for a strapless Armani gown with a suede-like texture.  I love the look, but because she's got porcelain skin, it would've been nice to see her in some rich color.  Perhaps, a bold colored stingray cuff could have done the trick.
Like Super Bowl, this once a year Oscars show is always a good excuse to throw a gathering.  For me, it was mainly about the fashion.  What was your take on it?
