I am not sure if this happens to be the stage of my life where I pay close attention to home decor and interior designs, or indeed people seem to embrace the open indoor/outdoor living concept more than ever.  Either way, it's a welcomed phenomenon.  A deck or patio can be the perfect extension to your indoor living space.  Outdoor living spaces that are easily accessible to indoor rooms are most likely to get used.  So when you're designing your deck or patio, try to locate it in a spot that's in a traffic pattern (kitchen) or in a place that offers refuge, such as off the master bedroom or living room.

Bringing the indoors out in grand style like how Bowery Interior Architecture has done for their clients is undeniably irresistible.  However, it's a little unrealistic for the rest of us who don't live in the sunshine states, no?  Well, maybe not.  With today's sturdy outdoor fabrics and wide selection of outdoor furniture, it can be accomplished no matter where you are geographically.  Though regardless of the outdoor furniture's weather/condition proof, I would recommend removing sofa seat cushions and pillows to be stored away for the winter months.

To transform your deck into a relaxing and restful retreat can be hefty, but depends on how you approach it, it doesn't have to break your bank.  Here are some basic rules:
  • Bring the Indoors Out- Add accessories such as outdoor rugs to dress up your deck floor and canopies that will create shade and offer a ceiling.  Be Playful- Add character to your outdoor spaces by creating different designs in the deck flooring. Not all of the boards have to run the same direction, nor do need to be made from the same material.
  • Boost Visual Appeal- Small accents, such as statue/sculpture or water features, can do wonders to make outdoor living spaces feel dynamic and interesting. Scour flea markets for inexpensive castoffs. In place of a built-in fountain consider a tabletop version.
  • Include a variety of seating options- lounge chairs, love seats, benches, pillows, and even sofas in just about every style imaginable.  As many choices as you can include in an outdoor living space will help family and friends enjoy it.
deck can be a great place for outdoor meals or a spot to sit and enjoy a sunrise, a great book, or a pleasant conversation. It's well worth spending on a face-lift if not a complete makeover.  The summer days are just around the corner, so you might want to consider some fun projects ahead.
